the fate of the world.

I don't know about the rest of you .. but I quite often fear for the fate of the world. I watched a video from SourceFed yesterday that says a good portion of people don't know how to spell anymore because of spell check..

which doesn't surprise me at all. I can't spell a lot of words that are probably considered common. I rely on spell check to alert me to my spelling mistakes. Though I think part of that can be blamed on our typing instructors who taught us to just type essay's without worrying about spelling and to go back and check it after the fact so as to be able to type faster. I can type 80wpm but I know I make a lot of mistakes along the way.. so who is right? Should we be more concerned about our spelling or our typing speed. I mean.. wasn't spell check invented for a reason?

Another thing that concerns me is the level of reading these days... do kids read like they used to? I used to read all the time as a kid? The novels they write for kids these days seemed to be more "dumbed down" then the ones I read as a kid... then again I guess most kids aren't reading Stephen King at the age of 11... what can I say.. I love myself some horror. Part of this comes from the fact that I came across a test this morning posted by @HollyConway on twitter which was able to test how fast you read and what reading level that equates to. (link to test here) I wonder how many people would actually test at a reading level comparable to their actual education level? I wonder because of books like Twilight that are written so horrendously that I can't even understand how people enjoyed reading them?

Finally today.. I wonder how far this world has gone with being PC... again on twitter this morning I came across an article about a woman who missed her connecting flight because she was forced to speak with the pilot regarding her tshirt being offensive (link to article here)... seriously people? Everything these days  can be considered "offensive" .. it's ridiculous. You can't walk two steps in any direction on the internet these days without someone getting offended by this that or whatever.... man the fuck up people... you don't like something? DON'T FUCKING LOOK AT IT... you don't like what someone is saying? DON'T FUCKING LISTEN TO THEM... it's quite simple.

blah... sorry for the random ranting this morning... I'm writing this before my first cup of coffee because I was just so bothered by these things.

I blame my sex dream with Mark Ruffalo.

  1. In my defense, I didn't know how to spell before spell check.

And why did she have to talk to the pilot? Doesn't he have better things to do? Shes wearing a shawl... can't they just, if they are SO upset by the word FUCK, ask her to cover it?

And what about all the dudes that where "Fuck this" and "Fuck that." I'm concentrating my anger on the fuck part, because they are denying that it was because of the pro choice part. They don't want to get me starting on that.

    1. agreed 100% .. I love how they tweeted me saying it wasn't about ProChoice but I've seen people with shirts that say much worse. Did someone actually complain?

  2. It says I can read Tolstoy's War and Peace in 20 hours and 55 minutes. I can tell you right now that the test may be accurate in some areas, but when it comes to comprehension and retention it's a bit off. War and Peace took me 1 month and 2 hours of reading a night.

I don't think kids read like they used to. They may read as much, but it's certainly not the same type of reading. It would be interesting to see where the bar is set for comprehension and critical thinking as opposed to where it was set 20 years ago.

    1. agreed... I don't know that kids these days are thinking critically about what they are reading.

  3. I'm totally stealing this video for my classes next year. It's so frustrating to hear "young people" (I hate the phrase because it makes me sound so old at the ripe age of 23) say that spelling and grammar don't matter. Maybe this will help :-)

If it doesn't, I'll just say they all had sex dreams about Mark Ruffalo. Makes sense to me.

  4. I am certainly guilty of chronically misspelling certain words, but I do try to go back and relearn it.

The only problem is that it sometimes comes down to muscle memory while I am typing... and no matter what I do, I will constantly misspell the word and go through the same process of attempting to relearn it.
